What opportunities are emerging beyond the better-known UK and US equity markets? And how can investment trusts give UK retail investors access to specialist areas of the global market?
On 7 October 2026 from 6pm to 7pm, Sharesify is bringing together J.P. Morgan European Discovery Trust and EJF Investments for a free online webinar designed to help UK retail investors understand two very different investment trust strategies.
The event will give investors an opportunity to hear directly about the investment approach, portfolio positioning, performance and opportunities facing each trust — as well as the risks investors need to consider. Investors will also be able to put their questions ‘live’ or ahead of the event to guest speakers Jules Bloch – executive director, J.P. Morgan Asset Management, and Neal Wilson – CEO and EJF Investments manager.
Two very different investment approaches
J.P. Morgan European Discovery Trust
J.P. Morgan European Discovery Trust aims to deliver long-term capital growth by investing in high-quality smaller companies across Continental Europe.
The trust focuses on an area of the market that can be overlooked by investors concentrating on large European companies. Its managers look for businesses with strong market positions, resilient business models and attractive long-term growth prospects.
The strategy has produced a strong recent performance record. For the 12 months ended 31 August 2026, the trust delivered a 14.6% NAV total return, compared with 12.7% for its MSCI Europe ex UK Small Cap benchmark. Over three years, its annualised NAV return was 18.2%, against 13% for the benchmark.

The trust therefore offers investors exposure to a potentially interesting combination of European smaller companies, structural growth themes and diversification away from the mega-cap end of global equities.
EJF Investments
EJF Investments provides a very different type of exposure.
The company primarily invests in a diversified portfolio of regulated debt issued by smaller US banks and insurance companies, while also participating in certain management-fee income streams of EJF Capital.
For income-focused investors, EJF is particularly interesting. It aims to deliver annual total returns of 8%-10% and currently offers an income yield of 8%+.
Data from the Association of Investment Companies showed EJF delivering a 20.9% share price total return in the 12 months to 24 September 2026, and its NAV total return was 17.5%, versus the Debt – Structured Finance AIC sector’s 2.2% and 3.5% respectively.
Its three- and five-year NAV total returns were 29.0% and 43.0%, respectively.
Association of Investment Companies
That makes EJF a very different proposition from a conventional equity growth trust — and potentially particularly relevant to investors researching income, alternative credit exposure and portfolio diversification.
Why should UK retail investors attend?
Investment trusts can be difficult to understand from a factsheet alone. Investors need to consider not only the underlying portfolio but also the trust’s investment process, gearing, discount or premium to NAV, dividend policy and the risks associated with the strategy.
This free online webinar provides an opportunity to go beyond the headline numbers.
During the one-hour session, investors will be able to learn more about:
- What each trust invests in and why
- How the investment managers identify opportunities
- The thinking behind their current portfolio positioning
- What has driven recent performance
- The outlook for European smaller companies and US financial-sector credit
- Income and capital-growth potential
- The key risks investors should understand
- How investment trusts can potentially complement a diversified portfolio
- Questions investors should ask before considering either trust for an ISA or SIPP
The contrast between the two strategies is particularly useful. J.P. Morgan European Discovery Trust is focused on capital growth from European smaller companies, while EJF Investments offers exposure to specialist US financial-sector debt and an income-oriented strategy.
For investors researching investment trusts beyond the most widely followed names, the free online webinar offers an opportunity to hear directly from decision-makers and gain a better understanding of how these strategies work.
